• Design and manufacture of industrial knives to your specifications

Our products are custom-designed to your specifications, perfectly meeting your needs.

  • Tool Types: Cold saws (HSS), Tungsten Carbide Tipped (TCT) blades for non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper) and steels, bimetal or carbide band saw blades, circular knives for slitting metal coils.

Performance Coatings: Advanced surface treatments such as TiN (Titanium Nitride), TiAlN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride) or nitriding to drastically reduce friction, block heat transfer, and double cutting speed.

Industrial Applications: Cutting tubes, extruded aluminum profiles, solid stainless steel bars, exotic metals (titanium, Inconel), or continuous sheet metal slitting.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Industrial Blade Design Services

Which coating should we choose for cutting heavy duty or stainless steel?

For hard steels and stainless steel, we strongly recommend TiAlN (Titanium Aluminium Nitride) coating. This coating forms an ultra-hard aluminium oxide layer at high temperatures, acting as a thermal shield on the tooth. It allows for higher cutting speeds while limiting abrasive wear.

Can you manufacture slitting knives with tight thickness tolerances?

Yes. For steel service centers and coil slitting lines, we machine circular slitting knives with thickness tolerances down to a few micrometers. This ensures perfect alignment, reduces burrs on the sheet edges, and eliminates vibrations on the line.

Is it economical to resharpen and re-tooth HSS (Cold Saw) circular saw blades?

Absolutely. Unlike other types of tools, an HSS circular saw blade can be resharpened and even re-cut (creating new teeth after complete wear) numerous times. We offer this comprehensive CNC grinding service in-house, allowing you to maximize the value of your initial investment.

What is the best tooth configuration for cutting thin metal tubes versus solid bars?

The golden rule in metallurgy is to have at least 3 teeth engaged in the material simultaneously. For thin tubes and profiles, fine toothing (large number of teeth) is required to prevent the teeth from catching and breaking. For solid bars, wider (more spaced) toothing is necessary to allow for efficient removal of heavy metal chips.

Can you design blades for high-speed cutting of extruded aluminum?

Yes, we make carbide-tipped (TCT) blades specially configured for aluminum and non-ferrous metals. They typically have a triple-chip grind (TCG) tooth with a positive or negative hook angle depending on the machine type, preventing material build-up (gumming) on the teeth.

How important is the "tensioning" of a circular or band saw blade, and how do you ensure it?

Tensioning involves stretching the center of the blade to compensate for the centrifugal force and heat generated on the periphery (the teeth) during high-speed cutting. If a blade is improperly tensioned, it will "wobble," creating variations in the thickness of your lumber. At Scies Mercier, each blade is manually tensioned and checked by highly skilled master sharpeners using precision equipment, ensuring perfect trajectory stability.

Do you offer brazed carbide planer knives, or "Centric" or "Tersa" style disposable knives?

We manufacture and supply a full range. We cast and machine conventional high-speed steel (HSS) knives and carbide-tipped knives for very abrasive hardwoods. We also supply interchangeable inserts and reversible thin knives compatible with the most popular quick-change cutterhead systems on the market.

Do you offer a pick-up and delivery service for the maintenance and sharpening of our saw blades?

Depending on your region and production volume in Quebec and neighboring provinces, we have planned service routes to collect your dull cutting tools directly from your plant and return them resharpened and balanced. Contact our customer service to verify if your sawmill is located on one of our regular routes.
