Design and manufacture of industrial knives to your specifications
Our products are custom-designed, according to your specifications, to perfectly meet your needs.
-
Types of blades and knives: Circular saw blades (edgers, ripsaws, head saws), band saw blades, planer knives, hog knives, chipper knives.
Technologies and tips: Premium quality tungsten carbide teeth, Stellite® tips (essential for frozen wood or abrasive species), high-precision tensioned saw bodies to prevent deflection.
Industrial objectives: Reduced kerf (thin kerf) to maximize material yield (more lumber, less sawdust), noise reduction, and high-speed stability.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Industrial Blade Design Services
What is the difference between a carbide tip and a Stellite® tip for wood sawing?
Tungsten carbide offers exceptional hardness, ideal for clean, dry wood or composite panels (MDF, plywood). Stellite® (cobalt alloy), on the other hand, is more resistant to thermal shock and the natural acidity of certain wood species (such as cedar or oak), and is significantly superior for sawing green wood or frozen wood in winter without chipping.
Can you make thin-kerf blades to reduce wood waste?
Yes, we specialize in designing thin-kerf circular and band saw blades. By reducing the thickness of the saw body and tip while maintaining perfect tensioning, we enable you to increase your lumber yield per log and reduce your sawdust waste.
Do you offer a retensioning and regrinding service for industrial blades?
Exactly. A saw blade loses its tension and sharpness after being subjected to heavy loads. We offer a complete in-house maintenance service: CNC resharpening, replacement of damaged tips, straightening and re-tensioning to restore your tools to their original performance.
How can your custom blades help us reduce noise in our planing or sawing mill?
High noise is often caused by air turbulence between the teeth and blade body vibrations. In custom design, we integrate laser-cut expansion slots filled with damping resin. Combined with optimized tooth geometry, these technologies significantly reduce aerodynamic whistling and the decibel level on the production floor.
We are seeing tear-out on finished wood or melamine panels. What blade configuration do you recommend?
Chipping occurs when the hook angle or tooth profile is not suited to the material. For composite panels (MDF, particleboard, plywood) or finished hardwood, we design blades with a high alternate top bevel (Hi-ATB) or triple chip (TCG) tooth pattern. We adjust the hook angle to a neutral or negative level to ensure a clean entry into the material and eliminate the need for post-cut sanding.
How important is the "tensioning" of a circular saw blade or band saw blade, and how do you ensure it?
Tensioning involves stretching the center of the blade to compensate for centrifugal force and heat generated on the periphery (teeth) during high-speed cutting. If a blade is poorly tensioned, it will "snake," creating variations in thickness on your lumber. At Scies Mercier, each blade is manually tensioned and checked by highly skilled master sharpeners using precision equipment, ensuring perfect trajectory stability.
Do you offer brazed carbide planer knives or disposable "Centric" or "Tersa" type knives?
We manufacture and supply a comprehensive range. We cast and machine conventional high-speed steel (HSS) knives and carbide-tipped knives for highly abrasive hardwoods. We also supply interchangeable inserts and reversible thin knives compatible with the most popular quick-change cutter head systems on the market.
Do you offer a pickup and delivery service for the maintenance and sharpening of our sawmill blades?
Depending on your region and production volume in Quebec and neighboring provinces, we have planned service routes to collect your dull cutting tools directly from your plant and return them resharpened and balanced to you. Contact our customer service to check if your sawmill is located on one of our regular routes.
